Chataway Sports
CONTEXT
This is not a traditional portfolio piece.
In this situation I was the client and the agency. And a whole lot of other things too.
Chataway Sports Technologies was a company I co-founded with my good friend and business partner Mark Freedman. Our mission was to enable athletes to achieve new levels of excellence in sport. And we would do so by developing the most advanced training technology ever.
During the course of our journey we conceptualized, designed and built, and brought to market a revolutionary new product for ice hockey training.
Named the ScoreMore, it was a physical product that went in a hockey net and had dynamic scoring areas, specifically designed to replicate the experience of shooting on a real, human goaltender.
Highlights of the experience included testing the product with OHL players who have since been drafted, securing a partnership with Bauer Hockey Canada to have the product used during their on-ice equipment demonstrations across Canada, and being featured at the World Cup of Hockey 2016.
Unfortunately we had to fold the business, but I was involved from end-to-end, including the following, and am grateful for all I learned.
Determining functional specs for the product
Writing the patent (actually)
Writing and negotiating partnership agreements and contracts
Developing the company name, mission, brand architecture and product name
Designing and building the website and all marketing material / collateral
Building relationships with influential members of the professional and semi-professional hockey community
Filming and editing digital content
Managing our social channels, Instagram and Twitter
Making sales calls / visits to potential customers
Performing after-sales service on the product
Managing the P&L, income statements and tax submissions
